Driver Responsibilities

Anyone who drives a vehicle or cart or supervises people that drive for Recreation must complete the following requirements. This applies to professional, student, and non-student staff and volunteers.

Register

  • Attend a 1-hour in-person or zoom Driving UCSD Vehicles and Electric Carts course . This training must only be taken one time during UCSD employment. The following two courses are identical and are taught by EH&S. 
    • View courses offered to the general campus community at UC Learning Center (SSO).
    • Check for available upcoming courses sponsored by Rec.
    • View your personal completion status on UC Learning. Supervisors can also view their non-career staff’s completion status at UC Learning or have their employee email them a certificate of completion.
  • Behind the wheel training 
    • Occasional Drivers-in house training by supervisor or qualified student lead. 
    • Occupational Drivers-Recreation staff that are occupational drivers, required to drive vehicles or carts as part of their job responsibilities, must also attend The Smith System driver training. This consists of two parts; (1) 1 hour class and (2) behind the wheel training. The online class can be found at UC Learning (SSO). Supervisors can schedule behind the wheel sessions for groups of 3-4 staff directly with Environmental Health & Safety. 
  • Key Access - Request key access to the 2 recreation shared carts here. Check with your local supervisor for access to other vehicle and cart keys. 
  • Report accidents immediately to supervisor. 
  • Report repair/maintenance needs immediately to supervisor.
